India

We visited India last week.

My first visit was to Pune in 1999. It was remarkable and memorable in many ways. Unfortunately, this is one of the ways…

I was a new product manager, going to take over a team of around forty software engineers from my boss who had had enough and decided to move on. He and I entered a room of expectant faces, and I took a seat while he kicked things off, shared his news, introduced me, and invited me up to say a few words to my new team.

Now, the chair I sat in when I entered the room was a wood and metal chair with a table that folded over the lap. The scene looked something like this one. I had folded the table down when I took my seat and when I was called up I couldn’t figure out how to raise it. The first two minutes with my new team consisted of them watching me struggle to escape a kindergarten chair, before standing on the seat to climb out of the top of it.
