You’re never too big to be humble or humbled.
Phil Spector – gun-ho Mr Wall of Sound – produced the Ramones’ 1980 album “End of the Century”.
On July 4th 1976, the Sex Pistols and the Clash snuck backstage before the Ramones show at the Roundhouse in London. The Clash hadn’t played in public yet; Paul Simonon told Johnny Ramone, “we don’t think we’re good enough to go out and play yet”.
“Wait until you see us,” says Johnny, “we stink.”
Meanwhile, in New York, Phil Spector was taking John Lennon and Yoko Ono out to dinner. Lennon was a bit down so Spector decided to cheer him up. He brought some violinists over to play Beatles songs at the table. Yesterday. Michelle. Eleanor Rigby. John Lennon’s head is in his hands, as he mumbles “I didn’t write any of these ones.”
